It’s time to talk vegetables. Whether you like them or not, vegetables are an important source of nutrition. They are like marmite, either loved or hated. Do you crave a crisp freshly prepared salad or salty crunchy triple cooked chips? Either way they both have one thing in common, you can easily grow your own and now is the time the start thinking.

Let’s say you’re in, this year is your year of home grown. Welcome to the club! But where to start? Firstly, and practically, you must think about space. Are you going to have a small windowsill collection in the kitchen or venture outdoors. You can grow in nearly anything, old tea pots, wheel barrows, buckets and of course pots. A great option for small spaces is a living wall, making the most of a wall to create a handing oasis. However, if you’re looking for something a little more structural then raised beds are always a fantastic idea. This is where we can help.

We are experienced in building bespoke beds with bricks and timber. Last year we built this beautiful, raised bed which doubled as a perch on a patio, a great option when people come over for a BBQ. Our clients wanted something to break up the garden, add seating and grow vegetables. Who doesn’t love a multipurpose structure. The sides were built with timber sleepers then painted a wood treatment and lined the inside to increase durability. Its great to see that they were used to plant vegetables, which by the photos, grew very well. If you want to find out more, check out our raised beds page here.

Next, the fun part for you, is choosing what to plant. You can either grow from seed or pop to your local garden centre to buy the plants. Do what works best for you. If you’re a beginner, then the plants tend to be easier. Planting guides are always helpful to see what grows well together. Our recommendation? This year try green beans, lettuce, and carrots.  The green beans will need to be supported with stakes and carrots need deep beds.

Have we peaked your interest? Now is the time to get organised so you can be ready for the planting season to begin in the coming months. Have a walk around your garden, decide a budget and give us a call. Our initial visit and estimation are completely free, no obligation. We would love to hear your ideas and work together to create a design that works for you. Your time has come, home grown vegetables.
